Why foam for thin material

A napped cover holds thin liquid in the fibres and then releases it in an uncontrolled rush, which is how runs and heavy edges happen with varnish. Closed foam carries a measured amount on its surface instead, so it lays a thin material as a thin film. On gloss and urethane that control is the whole job, because any unevenness in a clear high sheen coat is permanent once cured.

The 6 inch format

Six inches with a small diameter and end nap construction reaches where a 9 inch roller cannot, and paints right up to an obstruction rather than leaving the last inch for a brush. Still many times faster than a brush on doors, panels, trim, cabinets and shelving.

Bulk economics

Foam covers are effectively single use with solvent products. Cleaning a foam cover of varnish or urethane rarely restores it, and a partly cleaned cover contaminates the next coat. A hundred pack is priced to be treated as a consumable, which is what these are in practice.
